To all our valued parents, treasured children, and long-time friends in the Coastal Kids family,  Recently, my name has been associated with a certain position in regards to the reopening of Orange County schools this fall, and I need to set the record straight.  In a panel discussion of the OC Board of Education, on the public safety of our children returning to the classroom, my comments were either misunderstood or misrepresented. And so I would like to make my position clear to all of you, to give you some peace of mind, and avoid any further confusion.

  • Since the beginning of the pandemic, I have been a staunch advocate for the use of face masks to limit the spread of COVID-19. I believe in their efficacy based on current scientific research. In fact, it is important to note that I lobbied extensively and effectively to make the use of masks mandatory for all medical healthcare professionals at Hoag Hospital.
  • I believe that social distancing is also an effective tool in slowing and limiting the spread of COVID-19.
  • I, and the entire Coastal Kids practice, unequivocally support the American Academy of Pediatrics’ position and guidelines for schools reopening this fall.

My team and I are in close contact with the OC Board of Education to rectify the spread of further misinformation in my name.  I have dedicated my entire career to the health and well-being of our children, and want you to all know that I would never, ever risk their safety in any way.  Thank you for the opportunity to clarify my stance on this extremely important topic. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely, Dr. Steven Abelowitz
