Q&A with Jessica

What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?

The Little Mermaid

What is your favorite children's book?

It's not a book, but my sister and I would stay with our grandparents every summer and my mema would always make up her own bedtime stories about a character named Wilbur the mouse.

What was your favorite childhood toy?

Gameboy and Nintendo were my favorites. I played most, if not all, video games.

Who is your greatest inspiration?

My parents have always been my greatest inspiration. Being a mother now helps me better understand what a sacrifice it was for my parents to raise me and the meaning of unconditional love. My parents have always been by my side through every hardship and joy in my life, encouraging me to be the best I can be, guiding and praying with me, and instilling in me the importance of resilience in the face of challenges. My parents are perfect examples of having faith, determination, and hope in every part of life.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

I love all things Disney. Growing up, my family had Disneyland passes, and my parents would take my sister and me all the time. Now that I'm older and have a family of my own, I'm so excited to share the same tradition with them. When I'm not at Disneyland, I also enjoy cooking, running, outdoor activities, and watching movies.

What inspired you to work in pediatrics?

My interest in pediatric care began at a young age. It started with babysitting, Sunday school teaching, and camp counseling, eventually leading to volunteering at hospitals and choosing pediatric clinical rotations. I've always known I have wanted to work with children, and whenever possible, I have made decisions for my education and career to provide me with the most exposure and experience in pediatric care.

What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?

I love taking the time to get to know my patients and their families, caring for them as they grow, comforting them during difficult times, and giving them the knowledge they need to live healthy lives and empowering them to advocate for themselves in the future.

How do you accommodate patients with special needs?

I believe in a patient centered approach, working together with specialists and therapists as needed to bring the best care to each individual patient in all aspects of their medical needs, including social and behavioral.
